At the Margaret Street Markets

Last Sunday, our Freedom Project team ran a stall at the Margaret Street Markets here in Toowoomba, Australia for the very first time. We set up their stall with jewellery handmade by girls rescued from the sex trade in Asia as well as some artwork from Elements of Eden. We also had the opportunity to busk during the markets with the money raised supporting our project. We give 100% of our jewellery sales to Destiny Rescue with the goal of raising enough money to free at least 10 children from the sex trade by mid 2018. We are well on their way, with only $39 AUD to go to rescue our first girl!

We loved getting to know the stallholders and market goers throughout the morning. As an added bonus, we got to sing along with the music and watch children come by; staring at the musicians and at times dancing or sitting down to take in the music.

Evelien shares,

“I really enjoyed sharing the heart and vision behind Freedom Project at the Margaret Street Markets. One lady who saw our market stall, came up to me and said “Rescuing children, that’s always a good idea. Tell me about your project.” I was emboldened by how straightforward she was and began to share about our project and our vision of using music and the arts to speak out against the injustice of sex slavery. At the end of our conversation, the lady bought some of the Destiny Rescue jewellery and said for us to keep the change. It’s so encouraging to see people’s hearts stirred for the captives and translate that into supporting our cause. I want to thank everyone who has supported our vision of bringing hope to the hopeless. We couldn’t do it without you.”

We are looking forward to running stalls at coming markets. In coming months, we will be inviting local musicians, YWAM Toowoomba DTS students, and staff to busk at the markets. We plan to continue being stallholders at the Margaret Street Markets, which take place the first Sunday of every month, with an additional market on September 18th celebrating the Carnival of Flowers.
